Barrier packaging solutions

Decoration and barrier in one single step.

1. Decoration and barrier in one single step

ITC Packaging presents the IML barrier labelling system that enables you to combine long life and decoration using an IML label with PP/EVOH/PP. This decoration technology gives high quality decoration with all the advantages of EVOH layer labels, and all in one single step:

Unlike other decoration processes such as dry offset, sleeve or PML, which call for second-step handling of the pack, IML barrier labelling simplifies the process and provides all the advantages of multilayer IML labelling.

2. How does it work?

Using IML barrier labels for products enables brand owners to make important reductions in oxygen permeability in injection moulded PP packaging, with only a small investment.

By including an EVOH layer within the IML label, there is a significant reduction in oxygen transmission from outside to the interior of the pack, thereby prolonging the product’s shelf life, sometimes even without the need for a cooling chain, resulting in energy savings and enhanced eco-friendliness.

A comparison of the characteristics of the options shown here (co-injection and IML barrier) with barrier thermoforming – the option most frequently used to date – shows the following summary:

IML (in mould labelling) on injected material consists of placing plastic material labels incorporating an EVOH layer in the injection mould itself, in such a way that when the polymer forming the actual packaging is injected over the label, it forms one single labelled pack, achieving a maximum coverage of the pack surface.

Our Barrier Packaging is a highly efficient solution in today’s packaging industry to prolong the life of food products and delay the expiry of nutritional, sensorial and health-related elements that contribute to the product’s quality and consumer appeal, while reducing costs associated with transport and waste product removal at the end of its life.
